Just when you didn’t think Garmin could come up with additional Nuvi models, they released a whole new line.  These have enhanced displays and a 3-D view.  Certain models add bluetooth, lifetime traffic and lifetime map updates.  Both RAM and naturally Garmin have released some nice mounting options for this line.  The RAM Mounts all feature the RAM-HOL-GA57U custom cradle which holds your GPS securely.

RAM Offers Versatility and Universal Fit with X-Grip Cradles

RAM first introduced their X-Grip line several years ago with their uniquely designed X-Grip cradle for cell phones.  Since then, three additional sizes have been announced.  I would like to say there couldn’t possibly be room for any additions to the X-Grip line, but I’m betting we’ll be updating this post a few more times.

RAM currently offers the following X-Grip sizes.  All come with a pre-molded 1″ ball attached tot he back except the largest X-Grip III which uses the RAM-B-202U ball.

The AMPS Mounting Pattern

The mounting industry does not have an official standard but the AMPS pattern might be as close as you can get.  The AMPS pattern is a series of four holes aligned in a rectangular pattern.  Some manufacturers use two of the four holes while maintaining the AMPS pattern spacing dimensions.  Manufacturers that have mounts that align to AMPS are RAM, Arkon and Pro-clip.  There are many others as well.

The AMPS pattern consists of four holes located in a rectangular pattern spaced 1.188″ by 1.813 inches.  Some manufacturers also have 2-hole adapters that support the diagonal measurement of 1.912 inches.  The AMPS pattern is fairly well known in the HAM Radio industry where many head plates use that 4-hole pattern.  Another common AMPS compliant area is satellite radio.  Almost all of the recently introduced radio cradles have the 4-hole AMPS pattern on the back.

Certain manufacturers like RAM have made almost all of their custom cradles AMPS compliant and use a series of AMPS adapters to attach it to their ball and socket mounts.

Locking Mounts for the Apple iPad, iPad Mini, Other Tablets

For those looking to leave their expensive tablet in the car, a locking cradle is a necessity.  The folks at RAM have developed a series of locking cradles that we’ll be discussing in this post.  All are either keyed or have a combination lock.  When coupled with a RAM Mount, we suggest adding the RAM-KNOB3LU for 1″ ball mounts.  This added lock will ensure the mount is secure as well.  The locked cradle is good, but with a locked mounting arm, it’s even better.

RAM has introduced a few different cradles.  All full size iPads can benefit from the RAM-HOL-AP8LU locking cradle with combination lock.  These custom cradles are for Apple iPad, iPad 2, new iPad 3, iPad 4.  These fit iPads without a case or skin.  An iPad with a case or skin will fit the RAM Tab-Lock expandable cradle.  These fit almost every case out there except for the big giant Griffin cases.  These do fit the popular Otterbox Defender case.

RAM also designed TAB-Lock cradles for the Apple iPad Mini.  Got a case?  Use RAM-HOL-TABL12U.  No case?  RAM-HOL-TABL11U.

These cradles are typically coupled with RAM base mounts such as the RAM-B-149Z-202U, RAM-B-101U and RAM-B-316-1-202U.

Here are some pictures of the locking cradles.

Car and Motorcycle Mounts for the Apple iPad Mini and iPad Mini Retina Part III

Here is our final installment on mounts for the iPad Mini.  First came the universal mounts that worked with the Apple iPad Mini with or without a case or skin.  Now here comes the custom cradle.  We have worked with RAM for a number of years and they typically release a custom cradle for the more popular devices a few months after they are released.  Right on time comes the RAM-HOL-AP14U custom cradle for Apple iPad Mini or iPad Mini Retina.  These will only fit your device without a case or skin.  This is a very well made cradle.  Constructed of a heavy composite with custom ports to accommodate all buttons and cables.  There is also a nice roller feature which isn’t available in other cradles.  This makes inserting and removing your iPad Mini an easy task.  These cradles, like almost all RAM parts come with a manufacturer lifetime warranty.  They are manufactured in the Unites States.

These are nice, well made mounts that will last as long as your iPad Mini.  Check out the pictures.

Heavy Duty Mounts for the GoPro Hero Camera

We sell a lot of mounts for compact videocams.  We’re excited about RAM’s recent entry into the custom adapter space for these popular cameras.  Coupled with RAM’s heavy duty mounting components and lifetime warranty, this is an unbeatable solution for a heavy duty mount for almost anywhere.  We have seen some very cool videos that range from motorcycles to under an SUV using these mounts and they are amazingly steady thanks to RAM’s anti-vibration technology.  RAM’s mounts cost a few dollars more but in our opinion are well worth the premium.

At the heart of these mounts is the RAP-B-202U-GOP1 adapter. The RAP-B-202U-GOP1 consists of a 1″ diameter rubber ball, connected to a custom GoPro adapter. The adapter attaches directly to the under-side of the camera, replacing the factory mounting bracket. This adapter will use the threaded knob included with the GoPro camera.

With mounts ranging from car to motorcycle to ATV, they have you pretty well covered.

RAM Suction Cup Mounts

This is the second post in our series providing an overview of basic RAM Mounts.  Our last post profiled the variety of handlebar mounts.  Today we are going to cover suction cup mounts.  Suction cup mounts are the most popular for use in autos.  There are a few states that have laws forbidding placement of anything on the windshield of your car including California and Minnesota.  In those states, consider using a dash plate with many of these suction cup mounts.  All RAM components have a lifetime warranty.  This is a huge bonus with a suction cup mount.  Many of RAM’s suction mechanisms are patented and really do stand up to the te4st of time.

RAM has a variety of suction attachments ranging from casual to industrial use.  All can be coupled with a RAM arm, cradle adapter and custom cradle.

As always, we present some good pictures for examples from our blog post.  Keep in mind many of these can be customized with different length arms and adapters.

RAM Remove-A-Pole Quick Disconnect Laptop Car Mount Base

RAM makes great laptop mounts.  The problem though, is they are big.  So big that you need to choose between having a laptop mount or having a front seat passenger.  That was until the Remove-A-Pole came along.

The Remove-A-Pole, RAM part RAM-VB-REM1 is made to go between the floor or seat attachment and the telescoping pole of the laptop mount.  When ready to remove the laptop mount, it’s a simple matter of removing the pin at the base and pulling your laptop mount upwards.  Easy.  Now pick your favorite passenger and let him/her ride shotgun.

Motorcycles and Drinking Do Mix!

Well I suppose it depends what you’re drinking.  If it’s a soft drink or coffee, we have the answer.  A mount for your drink on your motorcycle.  These mounts have a self leveling feature built in.  They fit a variety of configurations too.  They can also be configured for holding other just as useful stuff like GPS units, iPhones, IPODs or satellite radio.  Leave it to RAM to think of these.  Seems like they have a mounting system for almost anything!

RAM Mounts for the Common Man (or Woman)

RAM makes killer mounts.  Excellent quality with hundreds of customizable options (they have custom cradles for many GPS and cell phonemodels).  But their selection can sometimes be confusing.  We wrote this post to help explain how their numbering (and lettering) system works.  Some of  of this information can be found on their web site if you know where to find it.  But as a large reseller of their mounts, we thought it would be helpful to provide a brief explanation.

RAM’s system is a simple ball and socket design.  You need to make sure the ball size matches the socket.  The majority of RAM mounts sold for GPS, satellite radio, HAM radio are one-inch balls (RAM-B or RAP-B).  Most use the the metal (the M in RAM-B) but to save a few dollars, some will opt for the plastic (the P in RAP-B).

Arms typically come in several sizes too.  Again most common is the one inch ball, and there are three arm sizes (1.75, 3 and 6 inch sizes).  Most of our mount listings have an option to choose an arm size.

Here is RAM’s high level numbering system and arm sizes in detail:

A size ball = .56″ diameter (seldom used)

B size ball = 1″ diameter (by far the most common)

C size ball = 1.5″ diameter (used for heavier items like marine electronics)

D size ball = 2.25″ diameter (very seldom used)

E size ball = 3.38″ diameter (very rarely used)
