Locking Mounts for the Apple iPad, iPad Mini, Other Tablets

For those looking to leave their expensive tablet in the car, a locking cradle is a necessity.  The folks at RAM have developed a series of locking cradles that we’ll be discussing in this post.  All are either keyed or have a combination lock.  When coupled with a RAM Mount, we suggest adding the RAM-KNOB3LU for 1″ ball mounts.  This added lock will ensure the mount is secure as well.  The locked cradle is good, but with a locked mounting arm, it’s even better.

RAM has introduced a few different cradles.  All full size iPads can benefit from the RAM-HOL-AP8LU locking cradle with combination lock.  These custom cradles are for Apple iPad, iPad 2, new iPad 3, iPad 4.  These fit iPads without a case or skin.  An iPad with a case or skin will fit the RAM Tab-Lock expandable cradle.  These fit almost every case out there except for the big giant Griffin cases.  These do fit the popular Otterbox Defender case.

RAM also designed TAB-Lock cradles for the Apple iPad Mini.  Got a case?  Use RAM-HOL-TABL12U.  No case?  RAM-HOL-TABL11U.

These cradles are typically coupled with RAM base mounts such as the RAM-B-149Z-202U, RAM-B-101U and RAM-B-316-1-202U.

Here are some pictures of the locking cradles.

RAM X-GRIP III Universal Clamping Cradle for Tablets

Got a tablet with a case and want to use a RAM Mount?  Tough to do until now.  RAM recently released the RAM-HOL-UN9U.  This uniquely engineered X-Grip III cradle to fit almost all larger tablets with or without a cradle or skin.  While it isn’t the cheapest cradle ever released, it certainly is among one of the best made.  A series of spring loaded expandable supports easily separate to accommodate your tablet with or without a skin or case.  These fit the Apple iPad, iPad 2 and the new iPad 3.  These also fit many other larger popular tablets including the Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.

The back of the cradle uses the RAM round adapter RAM-B-202U (you can use the diamond adapter too but we prefer the extra attaching holes on the round adapter).  This can be coupled with many RAM Mounts including the seat bolt, suction cup, flat surface and many others.

Like almost all RAM Mounts, these come with a lifetime warranty from the manufacturer.

Vehicle Mounts for the Apple new iPad 3 Part II

Well it’s been a month since the introduction of the new iPad.  Avid readers of the MountGuys Blog will recall last month’s post with some universal solutions.  We now have some custom versions.  The iPad 2 and iPad 3 are very close in size, and fortunately a number of the custom mounts we carry for iPad 2 also fit the iPad 3.  These are custom mounts, so most will not fit the iPad first generation or any other tablet.  These are well made mounts, and leave all ports and buttons exposed.

Using your iPad or any Tablet on a Treadmill

The treadmill.  Great for long runs or walks.  But real boring.

Why not use your tablet on the treadmill?  There are some great apps to use that will help facilitate your workout and let’s face facts, watching a movie or using an ereader while working out can be fun too.

We offer a few options in the pictures below.

Vehicle Mounts for your New Apple iPad 3 Part I

New iPad.  iPad 3.  We’re not sure what to call it.  We don’t have one yet, and you probably don’t either.  What we do know is that the size is very close to the Apple iPad 2.  The width and length is the same, but the thickness is very slightly smaller and it weighs a little less.  We think that the custom cradles we carry for the iPad 2 will work, but we aren’t going to suggest them until we can test it with a real iPad 3 (new iPad, whatever).

We have already received inquiries into the mounts so figured it was time for a blog post.

We do have some excellent spring loaded cradle mounts that we know will fit the device well, with and without a case.  We will write another post in a few weeks when we can get our hands on a real live device and test it out.

We present a few of the mounting kits we know will fit well below.

Arkon’s New No Glue Removable Dash Mount Line

Finally a mount that can be attached to your dash and easily removed without leaving any residue has arrived from our buddies at Arkon.  As long as you have a clean flat surface, these will adhere, and it works on testured surfaces too.  The mounting base features a removable “sticky” adhesive that provides a strong mounting connection, yet is removable and reusable without leaving any sticky residue.  Though the suction pad feels sticky to the touch, it will leave no residue when removed.  If the base loses suction over time due to an accumulation of dust or dirt, lightly wash the base with liquid soap to recharge the suction power (go figure, dish detergent recharges the mount).

Arkon groups a variety of cradles with these mounts and they can be used to hold stuff as small as an iPod Touch and as large as an iPad.

Glare Control on your Apple iPad or iPad 2

Ever try to read an e-book or use a GPS app on your iPad when the sun is shining on it?  Kind of hard to see.  We have seen some anti-glare screen protectors on the market and tried one with poor results.  We have found a nice solution that is similar to our GPS sun visors.  These clip on to the rear of your iPad or iPad 2.  The visor will shield the sun from the tablet similarly to a baseball cap.  No need to wait for a cloudy day to use your iPad outside.  By the way, these also work on similarly sized tablets like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and HP Touchpad.

Using the Car Headrest for Something Other than your Head

We have found the headrest makes a great mounting point for a lot of stuff.  Especially useful for keeping backseat passengers entertained with your iPad or any tablet PC like the Samsung Galaxy Tab.  The posts to the headrest is typically the place where you would attach the mount.  It also makes a good mount point for some other purposes.  One of our suppliers recently snapped some nice pictures of using the headrest to mount a camera within the car.  Seemed kind of strange at first, but we took a look at the video shot while on the headrest and it was pretty darn good.  We also have a number of people who like to place their iPhone on the headrest and play music with the sound coming in from just behind the drivers head.  We tried that as well and while we prefer the stereo in the car, it does work.

Car Mounts for your Apple iPad 2 Revisited

When we first wrote this post a few months ago, we promised to update it when there was a better selection.  Well. we’re baaaaack.

Turns out the iPad 2 isn’t a lot different in size from the original iPad.  Some manufacturers (RAM for example) devised fittings to make their existing iPad cradles fit quite well.  Others, came out with completely new mounts and the expandable cradles we originally write about in our original blog continue to sell quite well especially if you have a case like Otterbox around your iPad 2.

iPads for Pilots

Filed under: GPS Mounts and Accessories — Tags: , — mountguys @ 10:01 am

Each day, apps are developed for the iPad that make this device even more useful.  The iPad functions quite well as a big screen low cost navigator.  The typical car mounts available for iPads may not work well on a plane.  Not to worry because there are mounts that are made specifically for pilots.  Instead of suction cups, they deploy glare screen and yoke attachments.  While we cannot recommend iPad apps, we can recommend these very well constructed mounts by RAM.
