Mounts and Accessories for the Big Giant Samsung Galaxy Note, Mega and S4

If you have a big giant phone from Samsung like the Mega, Note, Note 2, Note 3 and S4, you have probably found that mounts are hard to come by.  These phones are a little smaller than tablets and much larger than a typical smartphone.

Fortunately, manufacturers have recently introduced their line of phablet mounts and these fit the extra large Samsung Galaxy models quite securely.  Most include a spring loaded cradle which works well with or without a case or skin deployed (a little advice:  use a case or skin to protect your phone as these break easily with even the slightest drop).

We discussed the availability of spring loaded cradle mounts for the new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c in a prior MountGuys Blog article.  Today, we are taking a look at custom options for the iPhone 5s.  These include a custom cradle for your iPhone 5s to snap into.  These custom options are available for your Apple iPhone 5s without any case or skin in use.

Custom cradles are only available from a few manufacturers.  Most notable is RAM Mounts where the RAM-HOL-AP11U can be used together with many of their mounts.  There are several other brands that offer custom cradles as well.

Car Mounts for the Apple iPad Air Part I

Apple has announced their fifth generation of Apple iPad and called it the iPad Air.  For the first time, Apple has dramatically changed the dimensions of the device.  Somewhat smaller and if you have really large hands you can actually hold it in one hand without a problem.  Still larger than an iPad Mini, is there enough additional screen real estate to justify the additional $100 over the Mini Retina?  I guess it depends upon personal taste, but based upon Apple’s sales, a lot of people are paying up and purchasing a new Air.

Today, we’ll cover some basic mounting options.  A future blog post will cover custom cradles as soon as they are available in early 2014.

Car and Motorcycle Mounts for the Apple iPhone 5s and Apple iPhone 5c Part I

Today, we’re talking about mounts for the newly announced iPhone 5c and iPhone 5.  The form factors for the phones are roughly the same as the iPhone 5.  In fact, the iPhone 5s dimensions are exactly the same as the iPhone 5 where is iPhone 5c is a little larger.

A variety of mounts that are spring loaded will fit all three varieties of the iPhone 5.  Your personal requirements regarding location, ease of installation/removal and if your iPhone has a case or skin will determine the mount purchased.

The dimensions of the iPhone 5c:

  • Height: 4.90 inches (124.4 mm)
  • Width: 2.33 inches (59.2 mm)
  • Depth: 0.35 inch (8.97 mm)
  • Weight: 4.65 ounces (132 grams)

The dimensions of the iPhone 5s:

  • Height: 4.87 inches (123.8 mm)
  • Width: 2.31 inches (58.6 mm)
  • Depth: 0.30 inch (7.6 mm)
  • Weight: 3.95 ounces (112 grams)

Camera Mount Brackets for Hunters

Alert reader Charles H recently inquired into the availability of mounts for hunters.  Off to the MountGuys Labs we went and came up with a new series that will expand over the Fall.  Turns out there’s a limited market for these mounts but we were able to discover some well priced options for mounting your camera on bows, trees, and other places that are important to hunters.  The camera mounts have the 1/4″ – 20 threaded screw common to tripod and available on almost all cameras.

We have also read some interesting articles on hunters using their action cams such as the GoPro line for this purpose.  Just when we thought there couldn’t possibly be more places to mount your stuff!

Garmin Nuvi Mounts for Stuff Other than a GPS

Garmin makes some good heavy duty mounts.  With the mainstream use of SmartPhones for GPS use, there’s a lot of unloved mounts out there.  Now you can use your Garmin Nuvi mount with devices other than the one it was intended for.  Manufacturers have become very aware of this technology transition and have introduced low price adapters.  They all include a round adapter that fits the 17mm ball on the Nuvi mount.  Typically includes a cradle or additional adapter to hold your iPhone, Samsung Galaxy or even an iPad Mini.

So don’t throw that mount out just yet.  There’s still good use for it as presented in these pictures.

RAM Offers Versatility and Universal Fit with X-Grip Cradles

RAM first introduced their X-Grip line several years ago with their uniquely designed X-Grip cradle for cell phones.  Since then, three additional sizes have been announced.  I would like to say there couldn’t possibly be room for any additions to the X-Grip line, but I’m betting we’ll be updating this post a few more times.

RAM currently offers the following X-Grip sizes.  All come with a pre-molded 1″ ball attached tot he back except the largest X-Grip III which uses the RAM-B-202U ball.

RAM-HOL-UN7BU (X-Grip) – Cell Phones

Minimum Width = 0.875″
(Devices at 0.875″ must be a minimum of 4″ in height to fit into holder)
Maximum Width = 3.25″
Depth = 0.875″

RAM-HOL-UN8BU (X-Grip II) -Small to Medium Tablets like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7, Apple iPad Mini.  These also fit larger 7″ GPS units.

Minimum Width = 2.25″
(Devices 2.25″ in width must be a minimum of 7″ in height to fit)
Maximum Width = 5.75″
Depth = 0.875″

Adding an External GPS Antenna to a Verizon Wireless Network Extender

We receive at least a question per week on how to attach an external GPS antenna to the Verizon Wireless Network Extender.  Hopefully this post will help everyone.  Attaching the antenna is quick, easy and helps immensely to attain the 911 signal.  Detailed instructions on how to do this can be found in the user manual or in this excellent video.

Many think they remove the current antenna and that the external antenna attaches there.  That’s not where the antenna goes.  The key to installation is knowing where the secret compartment is located.  Look at the top of the extender near the back and you will see a small compartment door that says ‘open’.  Open it up, pull out the adapter and that’s what is used to attach the antenna.

The AMPS Mounting Pattern

The mounting industry does not have an official standard but the AMPS pattern might be as close as you can get.  The AMPS pattern is a series of four holes aligned in a rectangular pattern.  Some manufacturers use two of the four holes while maintaining the AMPS pattern spacing dimensions.  Manufacturers that have mounts that align to AMPS are RAM, Arkon and Pro-clip.  There are many others as well.

The AMPS pattern consists of four holes located in a rectangular pattern spaced 1.188″ by 1.813 inches.  Some manufacturers also have 2-hole adapters that support the diagonal measurement of 1.912 inches.  The AMPS pattern is fairly well known in the HAM Radio industry where many head plates use that 4-hole pattern.  Another common AMPS compliant area is satellite radio.  Almost all of the recently introduced radio cradles have the 4-hole AMPS pattern on the back.

Certain manufacturers like RAM have made almost all of their custom cradles AMPS compliant and use a series of AMPS adapters to attach it to their ball and socket mounts.
