Garmin Nuvi Mounts for Stuff Other than a GPS

Garmin makes some good heavy duty mounts.  With the mainstream use of SmartPhones for GPS use, there’s a lot of unloved mounts out there.  Now you can use your Garmin Nuvi mount with devices other than the one it was intended for.  Manufacturers have become very aware of this technology transition and have introduced low price adapters.  They all include a round adapter that fits the 17mm ball on the Nuvi mount.  Typically includes a cradle or additional adapter to hold your iPhone, Samsung Galaxy or even an iPad Mini.

So don’t throw that mount out just yet.  There’s still good use for it as presented in these pictures.

Just when you didn’t think Garmin could come up with additional Nuvi models, they released a whole new line.  These have enhanced displays and a 3-D view.  Certain models add bluetooth, lifetime traffic and lifetime map updates.  Both RAM and naturally Garmin have released some nice mounting options for this line.  The RAM Mounts all feature the RAM-HOL-GA57U custom cradle which holds your GPS securely.

Alternative Mounting Options for the Golf Buddy Voice

Golf Buddy recently broke ground with a talking golf GPS called the Golf Buddy Voice.  It’s the smallest we have seen.  So small that using the belt clip and placing it on your waistband renders it pretty useless.

In search of a better solution, it was off the the MountGuys Labs we went and came up with two excellent options.  Our popular walking cart and suction mounts work real well when fitted with a special adapter that only works with these smaller clips on the back of the unit.  Take a look at the two below pictures.  We’re sure that you will find this better than placing it around your waist.  Both will use the belt clip that comes with the Golf Buddy out of the box.

The RAM Roto-View Adapter Plate Makes Swiveling Simple

Ever try to swivel your device into a different orientation while driving?  Not easy and can be dangerous.  Adding the RAM Roto-View to your existing RAM Mount configuration has solved this problem.

The RAM-HOL-ROTO1U goes between your device and the round or diamond ball.  The Roto-View utilizes multiple detents to adjust the tablet to the most popular viewing angles, including landscape and portrait mode. No need to loosen the knob of your double socket arm to reposition your tablet.  Instead simply rotate your device into the desired orientation.  These work great with tablets and phones, but can be used with any standard RAM Mount that has the RAM-B-238U, RAM-B202U adapter.  The RAM-HOL-ROTO1U comes with a set of longer replacement screws as well as the new adapter plate.

RAM Aviation Mounts

RAM makes mounts for almost any purpose.  The mounts are rugged and come with a lifetime warranty.  There are a plethora or location for mounting devices in a plane.  RAM has most of those locations covered.

The most popular location for mounting on a plane is the yoke.  RAM manufactures the RAM-B-121 (metal) and RAP-B-121 (heavy composite plastic) lines for use on a yoke.  The clamp mount opens up to 1.25 inches.  Both arewell made.  We like the RAP-B-121 as it’s rugged and you can save a few dollars over the RAM-B-121 variety.

Another popular mounting location is the glare shield.  This is the location that is located just above the controls and blocks the sun glare.  RAM’s RAM-B-177 line clasps to the glare shield.  These fit up to 1.25 inches wide.

The suction cup line is popular as well.  We recommend RAM’s RAM-B-166 line.  This includes RAM’s best suction cup as you do not want the suction failing while in the air.  With a pivot point at the base and cradle, you can angle this very easily.

RAM Motorcycle Mounts for Places Other than the Handlebar

Today, we are writing for those wanting to put a device on their motorcycle but not on their handlebar.  This request is more common than you might think.  Many motorcycles do not have a standard round handlebar.  In some cases you simply may not have sufficient space on your handlebar.

Fortunately our buddies at RAM Mount have provided plenty of options.  The most common non handlebar mount is the base for the brake or clutch reservoir.  Commonly used on Harley Davidson and Honda models like the Goldwing, the RAM-B-174 models work quite well and comes with replacement bolts for your motorcycle that are long enough to accommodate the old bolts plus the additional depth from the mounting post.

The next most popular option is the mirror frame.  RAM makes two mounting bases for this purpose.  The RAM-B-252U uses an 11mm hole.  The RAM-B-272U uses a 9mm hole.  Just add screws and washers and these fit the mirror frame on your bike.

Seems like we sell a lot of fork stem mounts to the UK.  Not terribly sure which models they use these for but they sure are popular across the pond.  The RAM-B-342U mounting base works with stems as small as 12mm.  The RAM-B-367U is a highly versatile mounting kit that includes a set of M8 bolts and is also very popular.  Lastly, there are mounting bases that attach to your reservoir cover.  The RAM-B-345U and RAM-B-346U are similar but have a ball in a different location.

RAM Suction Cup Mounts

This is the second post in our series providing an overview of basic RAM Mounts.  Our last post profiled the variety of handlebar mounts.  Today we are going to cover suction cup mounts.  Suction cup mounts are the most popular for use in autos.  There are a few states that have laws forbidding placement of anything on the windshield of your car including California and Minnesota.  In those states, consider using a dash plate with many of these suction cup mounts.  All RAM components have a lifetime warranty.  This is a huge bonus with a suction cup mount.  Many of RAM’s suction mechanisms are patented and really do stand up to the te4st of time.

RAM has a variety of suction attachments ranging from casual to industrial use.  All can be coupled with a RAM arm, cradle adapter and custom cradle.

RAM Mounts for Handlebars

We have been selling mounts from RAM for many years.  They make great mounts which carry a manufacturer lifetime warranty.  They make a lot of mounts.  We mean a LOT of mounts.  Sometimes the selection can be daunting and we thought a blog posting on the various handlebar models would help to highlight the different types and purposes.  Their products range from simply handlebar mounts for bicycles to metal mounts for motorcycles and ATVs.

First up are the mounts most suitable for bicycles.  The RAP-274U is a simple plastic mount that fits bars up to an inch.  It will fit RAM’s cradles that use the two hole diamond adapter on the back.  To attach to your handlebar, simply remove the screw and nut on the bottom, slip over your handlebar and reattach the screw and nut.  The RAP-274-1U also fits the holders with diamond adapter.  These use included 7″ long cable ties to attach to your handlebar.  The cable ties are industry standard and you can easily replace them with the same ones that you can buy in any hardware store.

RAM offers many mounting options for motorcycle handlebars.  We find most motorcycle handlebars fall into the 1-1.25″ diameter range and the mounts that we will discuss all fit this range of diameters.  The most popular motorcycle handlebar mount is the RAM metal u-bolt mount, part RAM-B-149ZU and is available in 1.75, 3 and 6 inch arm lengths.  A variation to the RAM-B-149ZU is the RAM-B-149Z-2U which adds a metal strap option for handlebar diameters up to 3.15″.  Lastly, RAM makes a handy economical model called the RAP-SB-187U.  This one is constructed of plastic and will use a strap to attach to your handlebar.  It fits handlebars to 2.58 inches.  All of these motorcycle mounts have a diamond adapter to fit RAM cradles.  Some can also be fitted with square or round adapters for other cradles or special situations.

Aviation Mounts for the Garmin Aera GPS

Garmin’s current GPS line for aviation is called the Aera.  There are several models that include the 500, 510, 550, 560, 795, 796.  The Aera comes with a powered cradle that includes a hardwire and an audio jack.  The mount that comes with the cradle, not so great.

Fortunately, RAM Mounts has come through with an excellent alternative.  Most are made of marine grade metal and will bolt to the back of the powered cradle using the same screws that came with your GPS.

Mounting a Golf GPS or iPhone on a Sun Mountain Golf Cart

Attaching your electronic device to a Sun Mountain Golf Cart can be an interesting exercise because of the unique configuration of the cart.  A few years ago we stumbled upon a neat trick.  Most Sun Mountain carts have an umbrella screw hole.  Sun Mountain has a lot of accessories for their carts including an umbrella that has a screw at the bottom of it versus the typical handle.  That screw is actually the same one that is found on many tripods.

Off to the MountGuys Labs we went in search of a solution.  We came up with some nice mounts that utilize the 1/4″ – 20 thread standard screw attachment.  Add a custom RAM cradle and you have a well built solution that comes with a manufacturer lifetime warranty.
